The Psychology And Science Behind Drinking Recycled Water
For my research evaluating the psychology and science behind drinking recycled water, I reviewed Collignonââ¬â¢s speech to understand a viewpoint of opponents against the use of supplementing the drinking water supply with pure recycled water. In his speeches, Collignon presents four major reasons why he believes recycled drinking water is high risk and why it should be used as a last resort. He states that it is a ââ¬Å"bad option for the environment not only because of the waste but the energy consumption as well, it is needless money spent, he does not believe that adequate monitoring and testing exists to ensure safety, and it is a bad option for peopleââ¬â¢s health because of the increased risk. Although he states that his stance is not oneâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Collignon believes the environment will be contaminated by the sewage if it is placed upstream from the drinking supply. The concept of being downstream from a drinking supply with contaminants exists for every occupant on this Earth, which is why there are catchment areas for water to be sanitized for drinking. Collignon believes the energy consumption used to treat the water will leave a larger carbon footprint on the environment. Collignon fails to cite the low-carbon energy sources and technology available. The United Kingdom Environment Agency has developed a plan to reduce all carbon emission produced by their water processing plants by 80% (Ainger). Charles Ainger of the Environment Agency outlines ââ¬Å"energy recovery through on site small-scale, low-head, hydro schemes, and insists it may provide a carbon efficient means of meeting demand and maintaining a low carbon approach.â⬠Aingerââ¬â¢s schemes include ââ¬Å"adsorbents and catalysts that can be regenerated using sunlight, low pressure self cleaning chemical free membrane systems, and energy monitoring that automatically optimizes and processes decisions based on energy/chemical usage and carbon production.â⠬ These same

Lennyââ¬â¢s Monologue Free Essays
Lennieââ¬â¢s Monologue: Itââ¬â¢s them sycamores I remember. Anââ¬â¢ the river, runninââ¬â¢ deep and green, tinkling jusââ¬â¢ like the way Aunt Claraââ¬â¢s house keys used to when she was out on the porch about to unlock the front door. Iââ¬â¢d hide my mouse in my pocket wheneââ¬â¢er I heard them jinglinââ¬â¢ keys, because Aunt Clara neââ¬â¢er liked ââ¬â¢em rodents hanginââ¬â¢ around her house. We will write a custom essay sample on Lennyââ¬â¢s Monologue or any similar topic only for you Order Now I was a smart boy, I really was. I see the clearing anââ¬â¢ I know Iââ¬â¢ve found it, Iââ¬â¢ve found the safe spot. Georgeââ¬â¢ll come get me here before the water turns black and the sun goes down, heââ¬â¢s always been better at directions than me, plus heââ¬â¢s got an olââ¬â¢ compass nicked from a farmer back in Weed. Maybe someday Georgeââ¬â¢ll teach it to me. But not soon, he ainââ¬â¢t going to teach me no compass because he gonna be mad when he finds me. The bush is sticking into me like Iââ¬â¢m wrapped up in barbed wire. If only I was in a softer bush, a bush made of hair maybe. Like her hair, the girl back at the ranch. She should grow it out and make a blanket for me, like Aunt Clara did with sheep wool. Except I know it ainââ¬â¢t gonna happen because hair donââ¬â¢t grow on people who donââ¬â¢t breathe. But I didnââ¬â¢t mean to do it! I jusââ¬â¢ wanted to touch it, I jusââ¬â¢ wanted to pet it like I pet my mice. I jusââ¬â¢ want to pet my miceâ⬠¦. The river still tinkles like ââ¬Ëem keys, anââ¬â¢ I feel like I should hide my mouse, but I canââ¬â¢t this time. I canââ¬â¢t find me my mouse because sheââ¬â¢s back at the ranch. Sheââ¬â¢s back there lying on the hay like one oââ¬â¢ those torn up beanie-dolls, the beans spillinââ¬â¢ outta her, prolly makinââ¬â¢ a mess oââ¬â¢ the barn. You werenââ¬â¢t so smart this time, Lenny, Aunt Clara couldnââ¬â¢t catch you but Georgeââ¬â¢ll. George is cleverer than Aunt Clara, oh, George is cleverer than anyone. Soon he gonna come crashinââ¬â¢ inta here anââ¬â¢ he gonna give me hell over anââ¬â¢ over. He couldaââ¬â¢ had it so easy without me, he couldaââ¬â¢ gotten a nice lilââ¬â¢ place, maybe even a girl. I could go, I coulda gone any time. George, he donââ¬â¢t need me like I need him, why, he donââ¬â¢ need me at all. Here George comes, anââ¬â¢ he ainââ¬â¢t yellinââ¬â¢, why ainââ¬â¢t he yellinââ¬â¢? I like him yellinââ¬â¢ because thatââ¬â¢s the only time he tells stories; not even at night when I ask him to, jusââ¬â¢ when heââ¬â¢s yellinââ¬â¢. I know George. I know he can make me feel as worthless as an empty can oââ¬â¢ tuna sometimes, but everââ¬â¢ time heââ¬â¢ll tell me he needs me; he gonna tell me that I need him, and he needs me. Anââ¬â¢ in the end, he does, he does need me because Iââ¬â¢m the only one who gives a hoot in hell about ââ¬Ëim. Thasââ¬â¢ right Lenny, you ainââ¬â¢t useless, George needs you. He says heââ¬â¢s not mad, he wants you to know that he ainââ¬â¢t ever been mad ââ¬Ëbout you. He ainââ¬â¢t lettinââ¬â¢ you leave him because we gonna get a little place. He says weââ¬â¢ll have a cow, pigs and chickens, anââ¬â¢ he hadnââ¬â¢t forget about the alfalfa for my rabbits! Oh, I can see it now, I can see it right across the river! George promises that everââ¬â¢body gonna be nice to me. There ainââ¬â¢t gonna be no more trouble, oh, George, can we go there now. I jusââ¬â¢ donââ¬â¢t want no more trouble. I jusââ¬â¢ want it to be me and him, him and me, George and Lenny, Lenny and George, the way it always is. Anââ¬â¢ Iââ¬â¢ll work harder than I ever worked before, I promise. Why, Iââ¬â¢ll work all day and all night, anââ¬â¢ Iââ¬â¢ll have the strength because weââ¬â¢ll have all the bread and milk we want. Nobody gonna kick us out because it gonna be OUR ranch. Guys like us got no fambly. They usually make a little stake anââ¬â¢ then they blow it in. They ainââ¬â¢t got nobody in the worlââ¬â¢ that gives a hoot in hell about ââ¬Ëem. But not us. Because I got you, George, anââ¬â¢ you got me. Messages from the book: 1. The Great Depression made life REALLY hard. 2. The American Dream is still what propels everyone forward, in the book itââ¬â¢s George and Lennieââ¬â¢s vision of their own ranch. 3. Racism is still prominent. 4. Sexism is also still prominent. 5. It is called Of Mice and Men because in the Great Depression there is nothing difference between mice and men, everything is all equally fragile, that everyone is in the same boat, making us feel for these characters. Dogs of WarAll quiet on the western fron Essay Example For Students
Dogs of WarAll quiet on the western fron Essay In one part of our being, a thousand years. By the animal instinct that is awakened in is we are led and protected. It is not conscious; it is far quicker, much more sure, less fallible, than consciousness. One cannot explain it(56). On the battlefield of any war, past or present one would think any soldier had felt that sense of survival at one point or another. This could be named impulse acted on by fear, nervousness, or as the quote defined it, instinct in violence. The very descriptive violence in the book is one of the large clues that tell us Erich Maria Remarque, the author, is telling us some of the events he had to go through when he served in the war. Other wise it would have been another boring war novel of which classes could be spared the time. These points in the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, can be greatly explained and identified. When confronted with his survival, this instinct can drive a man to do anything for survival, even turn his senses and behavior in to a wilder state of human evolution. One of the strongest themes in the book is that war makes man inhuman when confronted by violence and, or in war. From the authors point of view soldiers were often compared to various non-living objects, that were inhuman. The soldiers are often compared to coins of different provinces that are melted down, and now they bear the same stamp.(236) Remarque thinks that the soldiers mind-state has been changed from when they were schoolboys, the stamp being the mark of the soldier, changing them forever. Also soldiers are compared with automatons or more commonly referred to as robots. In reminder of all soldiers of either side had to go through and witness without the traumatizing violence and gore one would not have much understood this point. To a country or at least in charge, the soldiers are no more than this: inanimate devices of war or pawns. Remarque uses this analogy to give the impression that the soldiers are enduring the same feeling over and over again, as if they were inhuman. In this classic war story Remarque also describes the soldiers as inhuman wild beasts in addition to the non-living objects. Paul states that when soldiers reach the zone where the front begins they are transformed into instant human animals(56) Remarque explains the zone is like a magical line; once crossed the soldiers are not the same person(s) as they were in a safe distance. Experiencing violence on the front trapped in a crater of a shell, though protected by it, Paul Baumer feels such desperation. My eyes burn with staring into the dark. A star shell goes up;-I duck down again. I wage a wild and senseless fight. I want to get out of the hollow an yet slide back into it again; I say you must, it is your comrades, it is not an idiotic command and again what dies it matter to me, I have only one life to loose.(211) This could mean even th en though acting as some beast for survival he too has scrummed to the belief he is just another pawn. As nothing more than wild beasts Remarque states that the German soldiers are only defending what they have, not attempting to take what they dont We have become wild beasts. We do not fight, we defend ourselves against annihilationwe feel a mad anger. No longer do we lie helpless, waiting on the scaffold, we can destroy and kill to save ourselves, to save ourselves and to be revenged.(113) This could be explaining that any emotion they are fighting out of at this point is from aggravation and for their own survival, and no other situation other than that of war and violence could bring this about. The sense of fighting for the glory of the FatherLand has long since gone. .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 , .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 .postImageUrl , .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 , .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937:hover , .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937:visited , .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937:active { border:0!important; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937:active , .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937 .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc2e780acb484c732ab071938a5f52937:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: nutrition EssayThese points have highlighted when confronted with their survival and the presence of survival even if it means changing his human nature. The Concept of Flexibility
Introduction Pilbeam and Corbridge defined flexibility as the ability of an organisation to adapt the necessary peopleââ¬â¢s inputs in terms of composition, size, cost and responsiveness in order to effectively meet organisational goals and objectives (Pilbeam Corbridge, 2010). Examples of scholars who have written about the concept of flexibility are Taylor and Atkinson (Cheng Jarvis, 1996).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Concept of Flexibility specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More There are various types of flexibility and they include financial, numerical, functional, temporal and locational flexibilities. These work to ensure that organisations are not understaffed or overstaffed (CIPD, 2012). Financial flexibility has to do with the ability of an organisation to deploy financial resources only where necessary and avoiding unnecessary costs in organisational processes. Functional flexibility is the alloc ation of organisational functions to specific individuals. It also has to do with the ability of an organisation to have a workforce which can perform various tasks at any given time. Numerical flexibility has to do with the staffing of organisations depending on how much work is available at any given time (Acas, 2012). Temporal flexibility is the engagement of workers on temporary basis, otherwise known as contractual employment while locational flexibility is the ability of an organisation to facilitate its employees to work from their homes so as to cut on key infrastructural costs such as office space and transport (CIPD, 2013). The driving interest of the topic of flexibility in the UK is the need to liberalize the labour market. In 2003, the UK government introduced the right to work in a flexible manner especially for care givers and employees with children aged six years and below. In 2009, the right was extended to include parents with children of up to sixteen years. Howe ver, the right was enjoyed by those employees who had been in employment for at least 26 weeks (Flexibility, 2012). Currently, over 90% of all employees in the UK have access to at least one form of flexible employment with part time employment leading with 72% of all employees followed by flexible time at 50% while job sharing comes third at 45%. Some 37% of all employees work in compressed weeks while 24% work at home (Hooker, Neathey, Casebourne Munro, 2007). According to Atkinsonââ¬â¢s model, flexibility has the advantage of reducing employee turnover and saving on the costs of recruitment. It also reduces cases of absenteeism as well as improves customer service because employees work as per the given timelines (Vallespir, 2010).Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Discussion Atkisons, while working at the Institute of Manpower Studies became well known for his flexible model otherwise knwon as the ââ¬Ëflexible firmââ¬â¢. Since 1980s, the flexible firm model has gained popularity especially for its intention and ability to restructure the labour sector across the world and especially in the United Kingdom. This followed the financial cricis of 1980s which hardly hit many firms. The firms thus opted to apply the ideas of Atkisons so as to survive (Murray, Poole, Jones, 2006). The core principle of the model is the segmentation of employees into permanent or ââ¬Ëcoreââ¬â¢ and part time or ââ¬Ëperiperalââ¬â¢ employees. The ââ¬Ëcoreââ¬â¢ employees work on full time basis while the part time employees work on contract basis. The overall objective of Atkisons model was the improvement of the quality of work and services offered by various firms. In determining the ââ¬Ëcoreââ¬â¢ employees, a firm is usually guided by the skills possessed by people. In essense, ââ¬Ëcoreââ¬â¢ employees have rare skills and that is why t hey are engaged on a permanent basis. This is not to say or imply that the ââ¬Ëperiperalââ¬â¢ employees must be in possession of poor skills but what it means is that the ââ¬Ëcoreââ¬â¢ employees have to posses the ability to multitask. For example, a person who is trained as an accountant can also posses skills in strategic management, which can be beneficial to the organization. This employee is better retained by an organization because he or she is an important resouce to it. Organizations also foucs on training and retraining of the ââ¬Ëcoreââ¬â¢ employees from time to time so as to enable them to multitask. On the other hand, it is not a must for ââ¬Ëperiperalââ¬â¢ employees to posses more than one skill because they are hired for a specific period of time to undertake specific tasks. When the tasks are not there, there is no need of having the persons on the pay list because such an act would mean that the organization woud be incurring unnecessary expe diture, which would otherwise been used in other useful and profitable activities. Periperal workers are more sucseptible to layoffs especially during financial crisis. A succesful flexible firm usually has work flexibility and employment flexibility. Work flexibility includes things like establishment of work teams or groups, schedulling of work and how work load is balanced within an organization. Employment flexibility has to do with engaging employees either on permanent or temporary basis or as per necessity. For companies to effectively implement the Atiksonsââ¬â¢ model, there is need for collaboration between the companiesââ¬â¢s CEOs and the personnel departments, which essencially deals with human resource management. There is the need for the two to jointly develop an organizational startegy, especialy with regard to staffing. Communication between the two is therefore a very key ingridient for the succes of the model because industries keep on changing and thus the n eed to be always strategic.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Concept of Flexibility specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The need to embrace the flexible firm model is also based on the changing nature of the world especially with regard to information and communication technology which has made it much easier to work at home or any other place of the workerââ¬â¢s convinience. Many firms across the United Kingom and the European Union have embraced technology as a means of cutting expenses on office space, furniture, transport and other physical infrastructure. Arguably, there has been a radical depature from focusing on the hardware aspects of work to focusing on the software aspects of work. What this means is that organizations are able to engage people who are able to work from their home, provided they are able to understand their roles and how to discharge those roles in an efficient and effective manner . There has also been the expansion of the education sector, which has seen many academic institutions introduce online academic programs such as degree and masters progrms (VanNostrand Brekke, 1997). Students are enrolled for certain programs after which they are send the course materials online to study at their home and only go to the institutions for exams. Some institutions even go to the extend of offering the exams online. A good example of an institution which has been practicing this mode of study is the Liverpool University which offers masters programs through an online platform. This has enabled many learners to access education and also enabled the institution to cut on the costs of hiring lectureres and for building classes and purchasing other learning infrastructure (Kanigel, 1997). Flexibility in the United Kingdom is a topic of major interest both to the employers and employees. As mentioned in the introduction, the concept has been instituionalized since 2003 whe n the government through legislation gave employees with children aged six years and below the right to work flexiblby (Study mode, 2013). According to a survey conducted by third work-life balance employer, majority (92%) of UK employers said they were willing to grand their employees an opportunity to work flexibly (Brown Remenyi, 2004). However, about 27% of the interviewed employees said they had to approach their employers to request to work in a flexible manner despite the legislation requring all employees with children aged up to sixteen years the right to work flexibly. This is an indication that the employers largely accepted the idea only because of the legisaltion (Department for Work and Pensions, 2009).Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The survey further revealed that females were more likely to request to work flexibly than their male counterparts. Majority (68%) of those who made such requests had been in the employment for at least six months while 21 % who made such requests had been in the employment for less than six months. The survey revealed lack of awareness about the legislations giving employees the right to work flexibly (Department for Work and Pensions, 2009). This is due to the high number of employees (19%) who applied to work flexibly without them qualifying for the same. In order to increase the levels of awareness, the Britain government has established programs and plans to encourage employers to adopt more family friendly work arragments so as to allow as many employees as possible get access to flexible working. An example of such programs is the Building Britain recovery of 2009 (Department for Work and Pensions, 2009). Recently in the UK, there have been calls for employers to ensure that their employees are at liberty to choose what time to work and at which location (House of Commons business committee, 2007). This has been necessitated by the dynamism of the workforce, where you find people having more than one skill or competency and are able to do more than one job at any given time (Bureau of business practice, 1998). This has been seen as a complete departure or the need to depart from the classical scientific management theory by Frederick Winslow Taylor (Spender Kijine, 1996). Taylor argued that for organisations to achieve efficiency and increase their productivity, they had to analyse jobs and employ people who were able to do those jobs (FAO Corporate Document Respiratory, 1997). He came up with four principles of scientific management which include scientific selection and training of employees as opposed to the idea of selecting and leaving them to train themselves; the replacement of the traditional ââ¬Å"rule- of-thumbâ⬠methods of work with a scientific analysis, formulation and interpretation of jobs or tasks; close supervision and monitoring of workers who were given clear instructions regarding their tasks and duties to perform and division of work among the managers and the employees with the managers being tasked with scientific planning of tasks as the workers executed those tasks (Taylor, 2008 ). Through flexibility, organisations are able to increase their productivity and improve the recruitment and retention of a workforce which is diverse. Atkinson argued that through flexibility, the employers are able to brand themselves as best employers due to the high motivation among the peripheral employees (Browne, 2006). However, flexibility leads to increased workload among the employees, leading to fatigue. It also kills career growth and development. Since employees work on temporary basis, they are isolated from each other and this kills the intrinsic value of work (Gleason, 2006). On the part of the employers, fl exibility has the problem of posing as a threat to human resource development, which is one of the key ingredients of successful organisations. The employers are also unable to benefit from the multiplicity of talents and skills which are present in the contemporary workforce because the employees are engaged to do a specific task and they can only do another task under a new contract (Taylor, 2005). An example of an organisation which has practiced flexibility in its operations is the Border Force Agency, which uses teams of competent professionals on contract basis. The teams are only deployed when there is need to deploy them (Lizabeth McCabe, 2005). Through this, the organisation manages to save a lot of financial resources which were otherwise supposed to pay the teams if they were to work on permanent basis. Another example is the Citi bank, which during the Olympic Games allowed 30, 000 of its employees to work at home. This saw the bank save 30% in travel costs and effectiv ely solved the transport problem experienced during the Olympic Games. Conclusion Flexibility is a strategy employed by contemporary organisations to ensure attainment of their objectives using the minimum human resources. It is based on the philosophy that the engagement of employees on permanent basis only helps organisations to waste fiscal resources in paying permanent employees. It can be contrasted with the Taylorââ¬â¢s approach, which agitates for scientific management of employees. Currently in the UK, over 90% of all employees have access to at least one form of flexible employment, with part time employment taking the lionââ¬â¢s share at 72% of all employees working flexibly. Legislations have been passed to give employees the right to work on part time basis in order to create a work life balance and also to get opportunities to further their studies. However, it leads to isolation of employees. Reference List Acas 2012, Training and Business Solutions. Web. Brown, A. Free Essays on Mormon Religion
Mormon Religion, What it is and why itââ¬â¢s a cult? Religion has become a point of persecution for many people. To others it is a test of strength and faith. Nevertheless, among this persecution from people with no faith, some religions are persecuted by others in the Christian community. One of the churches most greatly affected by this persecution is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is more commonly known as the Mormon Church, after the Book of Mormon. The Mormon Religion is said to be a Christian religion. However, Mormons not only claim to be Christians, but to be the only true Christians. Mormonism began in the early ninetieth century, amidst the religious movement, the Second Great Awakening. Religion has become a point of persecution for many people. To others it is a test of strength and faith. African American In The 1920s Essay Example for Free (#1920)
African American In The 1920s Essay ? The 1920s were a time of struggle, pride, fear, and creativity for African Americans. Following WWI, blacks fought for the conditions and rights that they were given while fighting in Europe. They fought through countless riots and murders to push for equality. They migrated across the country to escape the horrid conditions of the South. They created an entirely new cultural movement that spread like wild fire. African Americans of the 1920s created a momentous movement of political and cultural dominance that would eventually lead to their freedom. The Post World War I era was a difficult, yet prideful time for African Americans. While African Americans were fighting abroad, they were treated as equals to whites in Europe. Due to American generals refusing to command blacks, African Americans fought side by side with black and white French soldiers under French command. In addition, there were a few all black regiments, the most well known being the 369th Colored Infantry (p. 8). Upon returning home in November of 1918, African Americans faced ââ¬Å"contradictory feelings of hope and frustrationâ⬠(p. 7). They expected to be praised and rewarded for their sacrifices made during the war; however, they were met with nearly the opposite. This new mood among the African Americans became Flowers 1 known as the ââ¬Å"New Negro. â⬠Coined by black journalists, this term described the new attitude of post-war blacks and their will to fight against the white oppression. Unfortunately, the American public treated them the same as before the war. African American soldiers were in shock from the striking contrast of black social conditions between America and Europe. While the whites were praised for their sacrifices, the blacks were not. In one case, however, on February 7, 1919, a few thousand black soldiers marched through Manhattan, and were praised by both blacks and whites alike; however, most white Americans didnââ¬â¢t feel the same as those in New York. With blacks having a strong hope for equality, and whites having a strong fear of this equality, America was set up for some of the best and worst events of the 1920s. The ââ¬Å"Red Summerâ⬠, coined by James Weldon Johnson, was a summer of hate crimes, violence, and even murder. On several occasions, both blacks and whites ended up injuring and killing one another. African Americans began to assert their new hope of equality. The first instance of this new attitude occurred in Charleston, South Carolina, when sailors killed a black civilian. A large fight broke out and several people, both blacks and whites, were killed. Riots began to appear throughout America. The worst riot broke out in Chicago and lasted five days. It all began when an African American swimmer drifted into waters between segregated beaches. A white man threw a rock at him and the black man ended up drowning. White police officers did nothing to arrest the white man. As the news spread, gang related violence quickly began to spread throughout neighborhoods. As tensions grew stronger, the violent crimes Flowers 2 became worse. Eventually, a mass riot broke out. Policemen fired upon several black men, and several thousand men became involved. In the end, 23 blacks and 15 whites were killed, and many more were injured. Unfortunately, the majority of the media downplayed these riots to try and keep everyone else under control, but The Crisis, the primary newspaper for the NAACP, published nearly every event, both good and bad. Over the summer, many other instances of violence occurred, leading to the Great Migration (p. 7-15) The lives of African Americans significantly changed during the 1920s. A large contributor to these changes was the mass migration of African Americans to the North and West known as the Great Migration. African Americans despised the Jim Crow laws, and tried everything in their power to either change or escape them. Many blacks living in the South gained much economic success after migrating to the North. Not only did the blacks want to migrate to the North for economic and civil gains, but they also wanted to escape the worsening conditions in the South caused by the Boll Weevil plague that ruined the cotton industry (p. 23-24). Upon arriving in the North, blacks began to build up their community. They built their own churches, which were significantly different from white churches. Their churches became a part of their lives, and became their community. The YMCA and the YWCA also began during this time period, promoting community as well. Western black immigrants came primarily from places like Jamaica, and were fairly new to the oppression of the whites in America. Because of this, they were not as afraid to start up new things. Flowers 3 On the political side of events, the NAACP was on the rise. By 1919, the NAACP had become the leading organization for black civil rights. Led by W. E. B. Du Bois, the NAACP constantly challenged ââ¬Å"segregation and political equality. â⬠(p. 57) A major success of this organization was the push for the Dyer Antilynching Bill. Even though the bill was never successfully passed, it brought lynching to the attention of the public, and eventually reduced the number of lynchings significantly (p. 60-63). While African Americans fought to make conditions better for themselves, some conditions remained poor. Some blacks began purchasing homes in ââ¬Å"whiteâ⬠neighborhoods, but were faced with violence, especially from the rising Ku Klux Klan; therefore, ending the housing segregation quickly gained importance (p. 66-68). The white schools were far superior, due to the much higher wages and funding provided. In Southern states, studies showed that white teachers were paid nearly four times as much as black teachers, and the black school sizes and facilities were vastly inferior (p. 68). A third problem was the constant fight against the judicial system. On several occasions, blacks were wrongly accused of crimes, even when there was little to no evidence to prove anything at all. For example, two black men in Kentucky ended up in court for raping a white woman on ââ¬Å"the flimsiest of evidence. â⬠Even though no one identified the men, the all white jury spent just fifteen minutes to find them guilty, and the men were sentenced to death (p. 68). Aside from the political issues, African Americans in the North began a mass movement of cultural expansion, including literature, music, and art. This Flowers 4 movement became known as the Harlem Renaissance. The precursor to this movement was the Marcus Garvey movement. Garvey pushed for blacks to ââ¬Å"reject the white society and build a separate life. â⬠(p. 77) He believed that blacks should never conform to white society. He also led the somewhat unsuccessful ââ¬Å"Back to Africaâ⬠movement, which was an attempt to have all blacks leave the country and live in Liberia instead. Following the Marcus Garvey movement was the well-known Harlem Renaissance. Even though renaissance is in the name, this movement was more of a birth than a rebirth. It all began during the Great Migration. As thousands of African Americans migrated to the North, many ended up settling in Harlem. This three square mile area became the largest concentration of black people in the world. Following the war, many writers celebrated this new life in the North, and praised the better conditions of the North in their writing. Many hoped that this mass outpouring of literature would ââ¬Å"break down the walls of prejudice. â⬠(p. 80) The most popular of these writers was the African American poet, Langston Hughes. Today, much of his work is considered classic literature. In addition to the mass influx of African American literature, jazz music was on the rise (p. 83-86) Jazz became a symbol of African Americans and the Harlem Renaissance. This product of music pulled concepts from ââ¬Å"African rhythms, blues chord progressions, church spirituals, European melodies, and American marching band instrumentation. â⬠(p. 86) Probably the most well known musician from this era was the trumpeter, Louis Armstrong. Even though jazz originated in New Orleans, it quickly spread to the East coast and eventually to Harlem. The Flowers 5 literature produced in Harlem was by far more successful than jazz, but there was certainly no shortage of jazz in Harlem. Both the jazz and literary greats became idols to many African Americans. They created a wave of inspiration in the black community that quickly spread throughout certain areas of America. The African American community fought through violence, held their pride, and created an entire cultural movement. Through the idea of the ââ¬Å"New Negroâ⬠to the eventual Harlem Renaissance, African Americans became stronger and bolder in fighting against whites. Through the NAACP, African Americans gained a stronger stance in politics than ever before. Through riots, beatings, and even deaths, African Americans fought to be treated equally to whites, and paved the way for their eventual freedom and equality. African American In The 1920s. Explain and comment on the proposition that the doctrine of the right Essay
Explain and comment on the proposition that the doctrine of the right of self-determination of peoples includes the legal entitl - Essay Example According to Franck (1990), symbolic validation and pedigree provide the cultural and anthropological dimension to legitimacy. Democratic entitlement has to shift to voluntary compliance, which depends on the strength of Reismanââ¬â¢s (1981) ââ¬Å"the authority signalâ⬠. The legitimacy of a rule is based on its durability and consistency. Self-determination has a well-established pedigree, because it is the oldest aspect of the democratic entitlement. Self-determination asserts the right of a people in a particular territory ââ¬Å"to determine its collective political destiny in a democratic fashion, and is therefore at the core of the democratic entitlementâ⬠(Franck 1992: 52). Thesis Statement: The purpose of this paper is to analyse the proposition that the doctrine of the right for self-determination of people includes the legal entitlement to democratic governance. Self determination among indigenous peoples will be examined on the basis of the United Nations Gene ral Assembly resolutions, and other relevant concepts will be investigated. The Need for Self-Determination in International Law Self determination has developed from its modest beginnings in the United Nations Charter to ââ¬Å"a legal entitlement of decolonization and to a free-standing human rightâ⬠(Higgins 1995: 115). ... ermination of Jews during the Holocaust, followed by mass killing of gypsies or Romas and other groups, mass deportation to clean out unpopular ethnic groups, the Potsdam Agreement in 1945 between Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom authorizing the expulsion of some fifteen million people of German ethnic origin who had been citizens in different parts of Europe, and other large-scale forced transfers during the same period of turmoil. A new international legal order based on pluralism and tolerance was developed. The International Bill of Human Rights emphasized the equality of all human beings ââ¬Å"irrespective of national or ethnic origin ââ¬â and also irrespective of race, religion and genderâ⬠(Tomuschat 1992: 152). States were responsible for securing human rights in their own domestic system; and their autonomy was understood as popular sovereignty. In article 21 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the authority of government would be based on the will of the people, which they will express through periodic, genuine and fair voting procedures. ââ¬Å"Consequently, democratic governance was an essential component ââ¬â both a precondition and a right in itselfâ⬠(Tomuschat 1992: 152). The right of peoples to self-determination was introduced in the Covenants mainly with decolonization as an aim. At the same time, the underlying rationale for self-determination is that of popular sovereignty based on people governing themselves. The most important principle of international law is that of territorial integrity, the maintenance of the inherited State and of the population residing in that State. Changes can be introduced only when there are justified claims of self-determination; and the international community has to clarify for whom the principle

Project Implementation Process Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Project Implementation Process - Essay Example It is also expected by the stakeholders that some commercial uses like an artistsââ¬â¢ studio shall have a place on the piece of land after it is developed for the generation of further income by drawing more people to the site. It is thus the developerââ¬â¢s duty to assess the site and, in this report to the School Governors, detail how the various issues put forth by the stakeholders shall be handled to make sure that the 2.5 million pounds budgeted for meet all the needs of developing the project (Kerzner, 2009, p. 9). Statutory Issues in Consideration There are several legal matters that need to be dealt with to ensure a smooth running of operations both currently and in the future. It is expected of the developer that all matters legal are put into consideration to eliminate all hurdles that may sabotage the project and lead to the loss of the benefits expected from the projects that will result from the facilities erected on the bought site. These issues shall be discusse d in the following section to quell the fears of the stakeholders and have their confidence and blessings as to the viability and profit potential of the project (Smock and Stewart, 2006, p. 30). The first issue is the legal access to the site that has been bought from the local authority. All the required documents concerning the transfer of land to the Drove Park School shall be obtained before the commencement of the project. The title deed shall be transferred to the Grove Park School before any activity is undertaken. It is expected that the complete transfer of the land from the local authority possessing it to the school shall be completed before the developer takes charge of the projects at hand. This is to avoid the eventualities that may result from the access to land that is under dispute due to one mishap or another (Russill, 2012, p. 41). Another legal issue that requires keen attention is the acquisition of the permit from the government to allow access to and developm ent of the land in question. An agreement shall be signed between Grove Park School and all the authorities that have a vested interest in the land to fully assure the Grove Park School that it has the full possession of the site at hand and that its developer is allowed full access and the use of the land (Nohe, 2009, p. 22). The site needs to be developed from a very poor and hopeless state to inspire the whole area and turn it into a business center of its own standing. Since it is expected that the project shall be very successful, plans should be put in place both with the owners of the land adjacent to the one under development to eliminate any future hurdles that may jeopardize development and other plans. The Grove Park School should thus focus on liaising with the local authorities to allow future expansion plans without breaking any laws in place. All government rules concerning the future plans of the project at hand should be known in advance both by the developer and al l parties with vested interest (Kerzner, 2009, p. 15). The developer at this stage assures all parties that all rules and regulations concerning the project both at present and in the future are well taken care of and there exists no major hurdle as to the development plans in place. Black Death Essay Example for Free
Black Death Essay Around 1330, a horrible plague was reported to break out in China. Trade between Asia and Europe currently was frequent, and in 1347 rat-infested ships from China arrived in Sicily, bringing the disease with them. Since Italy was the center of European commerce, business, and politics, this provided the perfect opportunity for the disease to spread. To the Europeans, it seemed to come out of nowhere and kill everyone in its path. The bubonic plague, as it is called today, continued at 10-year intervals throughout the Middle Ages. It spread rapidly for a variety of reasons. Poor living conditions were probably the number one factor in the passing of this disease. People believed that washing themselves would open their pores and let the disease in, so bathing was rare. This of course, as we know today, only excelled the spread of the bubonic plague. The bubonic plague had extreme effects on the demographics of Europe. The worst epidemic claimed the lives of nearly 25 million people, all in under five years. It took at least two centuries for Western Europe to regain its population. Urban populations recovered quickly, in some cases within a couple years, through immigration from the countryside because of increased opportunities in the cities. Rural population recovered itself slowly, because peasants left their farms for the cities. This time period in which the plague spread and killed so many people was known as the Black Death. The Black Death had major effects on Europe. Wars stopped and trade slowed considerably. People were forbidden to gather in groups and religious services were suspended. Homes of infected people were sealed off to protect others from the plague. Businesses shut down their doors, having a huge impact of the economic aspects of Europe. Many people fled to the country to get away from where they thought was the hot spot for the plague. The bubonic plague changed the political, social, economical, and religious aspects of Europe forever and had an affect on the way things are today. There were many consequences to the increases and declines of population and European society. People fled to the city because everyone around them way dying. So many died, in fact, that it had major effects on the population in Europe, which, in turn had effects on many aspects of society. Farmers who had provided food for people were fleeing and food was scarce. Government, trade, and commerce virtually came to a halt. No aspect of European society was not affected by the coming of the plague and by its duration. The demography of Europe in the late middle ages can be easily related to overpopulation in the modern world. Poor living conditions due to overcrowding led to the rapid spread of the bubonic plague. If a plague was ever to break out in such places like China, Africa, or any other 3rd world country, it would be devastating. In Africa there is a major epidemic or the Ebola virus. It is still running ramped throughout the country, and it is not treatable by antibiotics. Poor living conditions contribute to the deadly position of this virus, and science has no known cure. If it was to ever spread to America the impact would be great and might be similar to the consequences of the bubonic plague in the middle ages. Overpopulation and overcrowding lead to poor living conditions which then lead to the rapid spread of any disease that may happen to come.

Malcom X And Charles Sheldon :: essays research papers
Religious and Social Visions of Malcolm X and Charles Sheldon As with all individuals we all have different thoughts on what the world needs. Some people take a sutel approach in pressing the beliefs, where as others are very aggressive about it. Charles Sheldon a Christian who tried to push a movement throughout the Christian church based on what Christ would do. Individuals in the church and the community viewed Sheldonââ¬â¢s movement as a strong and sometimes ââ¬Å"impossibleâ⬠feat. However, it was never found to be a major threat to the society that it took place in. Sheldon was trying to start this movement within the church so that it would spread and the ââ¬Å"unreachedâ⬠people would see the light of Christ Jesus in Christians in the way that they live their everyday lives. Sheldonââ¬â¢s attempt to live in the theme of ââ¬Å"what Jesus would doâ⬠, did not force any beliefs on anyone or threaten anyoneââ¬â¢s beliefs. It was purely a movement of self-commitment that an individual made on there own basis. Sheldon did not look at those who did not take the challenge of following ââ¬Å"what Jesus would doâ⬠and frown upon them. No he just prayed for them and asked for guidance for him to reach the people. Malcolm X however, had a different agenda than that of Charles Sheldon. Malcolm was viewed by most Americans as a radical, many people say him as a black that was ready to speak his mind to the world. Malcolmââ¬â¢s mouth got him in trouble with Elijah Muhammad and was silenced for 90 days after his comments following the death of John F. Kennedy. Malcolm was by no means a person who was out to make friends. Not only did Malcolm make the general public question his comments, but also the Black Islam community was ashamed that Malcolm would say those comments in front of

Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality. -ââ¬Å"Edgar Allan Poeâ⬠. What a quote from one of the greatest writers of all time. Words have no power to Impress the mind without the horror of the world that we live In. People take their life for granted and everything they have for granted as well. It shouldn't be Like that. Although Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens contrast interpretation, style, and characters they do compare In plot, theme, and setting. I believe that Poe is the better writer than Dickens. One contrast between the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens is style. Nicholas Neckline is an example of style from the author's works. Nicholas Neckline at that time was considered to be the funniest novel in the English language. I actually did read the summary for this book and to me it seems like a funny novel to read. In Dickens's time it was just as funny as some of our modern day books if not funnier than most bo oks. Dickens style helped reach the level of success that is held by his name. Charles Dickens linguistic creativity differs from Pope's works.Doomed and son one of Dickens more creative works highlight this. Dickens was a very smart man who knew how to Incorporate his life and surroundings Into his short stones. Doomed and Son Is Dickens greatest triumph In the sentimentalist tradition. His creatively helped him get there. Poe was as creative as Dickens was. Poses stories reined over the same topics. Death and love. Dickens was different. Poe did have the upper hand in one category. Gothic Fiction. Poe is considered to be the founder of gothic fiction. Throughout the works of Poe he includes the pervasive theme of death and decay. It is almost a staple in gothic fiction, the theme of presence of madness, insanity, other internal causes, the supernatural in all of its fans, and haunted creepy locations. Almost all if not all of Pope's stories posses gothic qualities. Peg. 2 Dickens a nd Poe include some interesting characters that differ in their own way. Grip one of the characters in the story of ââ¬Å"The Ravenâ⬠by Edgar Allan Poe was a loquacious Raven that Dickens admired In one of his stories. In Barney Rugged a local Idiot wonders In and out of the story with his pet raven Grip.It Is said that Dickens wanted to use a parrot Instead of a Raven In his story but decided to go with the Raven. In the story ââ¬Å"Great Expectationsâ⬠by Charles Dickens Pip the main hearted is a little boy living with his older sister and her husband who is a blacksmith. Pip is a poor orphan who lives a troubled life until he comes into good wealth and goes off to England to become a gentleman. Pip falls in love with Mrsâ⬠¦ Habitats adopted daughter who was raised to break men's hearts in. Needless to say Pip lives a very confusing traumatic life but is an outstanding character and plays an important role in Dickens novel. In the story of Barney Rugged there is a young boy named Barney Rugged who is considered to be the local idiot who owns a pet raven named Grip. In the story murder Is involved with a character named Steward. The suspected murderer was said to be the gardener. HIS motives for killing Steward were unknown. All of Dickens books have characters from people in his life and stories that reflect his past. Pope's characters are often tortured by guilt. One comparison between the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens is the plot. Revenge and death. These two highlight almost all of Dickens and Pope's works. The Tell Tale Heart is a story about a man who seeks revenge on his childhood bully but in the end ends up killing himself. The Cask of Amontillado also portrays revenge and death. Peg. 3 Both writers also love to write stories about love. A Tale of Two Cities is a story about love, imprisonment and death. We can't forget about Great Expectations where Pip falls in love with Estella. Pip was crazy for Estella but Estella w as raised to break men's hearts. Poe pretty much is summarizing his life and feelings towards the love losses that occurred to him in his life.Probably the biggest comparison between the two writers is their way about writing about death. In the black cat, Pluto (the cat) is murdered by a drunk man. I don't know how someone can Just write about death. In David Copperfield the death of Davit's mother ends his schooling at crackles institutional. But wait there's more, in the haunted man, a chemist named Bedlam is an isolated scholar beset by his memories of the death of his sister and betrayal his best friend. As I started earlier Barney Rugged and the Masque of the Red Death also portrayed death. If anything these writers best works involved death. Another area where Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens do compare in is theme. Byronic Romanticism is an example of this. The influence of Byronic Romanticism evident in Poe is also apparent in the works of Withering Heights. Poe and dicke ns both were able to use this very well in writing a good amount of stories. Fate is also a big part in the works of Dickens and Poe. In the Masque of the Red Death a plague is going through town within 30 minutes a person would die of the plague. The king tried to avoid the plague by staying in his castle until the plague cleared up or went away. But Fate had the advantage as it always does and King Prospers caught the plague and eventually died of it. In the Cask of Amontillado fate would strike as pay back when someone is killed for crossing his friend who told him not to cross him. Long Tory short fate caught up to him. Peg. 4 Poe and Dickens love to write about people getting murdered. The black cat a story about a cat who is murdered by a drunk man. In Great Expectations Pip's sister is killed. The Tell tale Heart a story about a plan to kill an old man but in the end the man who tried to kill the old man ended up killing himself. In Barney Rugged, Steward gets killed by the Gar dner. A Trial of Murder a tale of supernatural retribution with the murdered mans spirit returning to ensure his killers execution. I can go on and on with this. These writers Just have a fancy way for writing death Tories. Poe has crafted a tale about the perfect crime whose criminal goes unpunished and about a crime that haunts a murderer. This is their bread and butter.Death. While Poe and dickens compared in plot and theme they also did compare in setting. Their dark and gloomy atmosphere really helped shape how the story was going to go. Poe incorporated a gloomy atmosphere and melodrama into his works because he read gothic stories as a child. So pretty much that's where Poe got that idea from. In Barney Rugged he would set the scene at the Village of Caldwell an evening of foul weather. In the Pit and the Pendulum the setting is dark, dreary, and scary. Poe is considered to be the inventor of the detective fiction genre. Both Poe and Dickens have written many of short detectiv es or short mysterious mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man's slow fall into madness. The mystery of Edwin Drop is about repression and rebellion breaking out. The melancholy setting that both writers have created really makes reading their stories that much more interesting. Dickens tells about the cold wet shelter less midnight streets of London and the foul drowsy dens. The Tell Tale Hearts setting sakes it hard for me to read but it adds so much meaning to it.In the Raven, Poe establishes an atmosphere/ tone of darkness, melancholy, suspense, fear, and anxiety. The settings in their writings made their writing powerful and to me really set the standard for their type of writing. But all in all Poe definitely was the better writer hands down. Best of all time. Reality. -ââ¬Å"Edgar Allan Poeâ⬠. In conclusion I believe that Edgar Allan Poe is a better writer than Charles Dickens and in my opinion the best writer of all time. I Just feel that Poe was more m otivated to write than Dickens was. Poe went through so much in is life and his writings reflect that. English research paper Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality. Catcher in the Rye Essay
Is Holden Caufield, out of the novel catcher in the rye written by J. D. Salinger insane in a sane world or sane in an insane world? But really what defines sane and insane this is what will be brought to attention through out this essay. According to the dictionary definition insane is some one of a not sound mind, mentally damaged or deranged or utterly senseless. Other definitions state that insanity craziness or madness is a spectrum of behaviour characterised by certain abnormal mental or behavioural patterns. Insanity may manifest as violations of societal norms, including a person becoming a danger to them selves or others. Where as sanity is defined as free from mental damage derangement, having a sound and healthy mind mind, having or showing reason, sound judgment or good sense. But in my opinion insanity is just some one out side of the norm in societyââ¬â¢s narrow minded views. Some one who is differentiating in there points of view from what has be come the strait and normal. Society has drawn these box out lines of what is sane and in sane especially in the era that Holden grew up in. Holden is a basic young boy who differentiates from the norm a little in his characteristics, he is a little bit more head strong and aware of the realities of the world and portrayed society. Though he is generally of a rational sane mind at the beginning of the book there are a few occasions where the cracks start to show and you can catch glimpses of his ââ¬Å"insanityâ⬠can be seen such as when Stradlater takes Jane out one night on a date and Holden states that though he has a few blank patches of memory he can remember being by the window staring out at nothing consumed in worry and dark thoughts, when Stradlater returns that night Holden shows uncharacteristic anger and rage that he can not contain resulting in him hitting Stradlater in the side of the head and when Stradlater holds him down Holden screams vulgar profanities at him in a fit of rage.

buy custom ââ¬ÅA Good Man is Hard to Findââ¬Â by Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor essay
buy custom ââ¬Å"A Good Man is Hard to Findâ⬠by Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor essay A literary work is somehow influenced with the political, social, cultural, and historical state of her time. Flannery OConnors A Good Man is Hard to Find is not an exemption. The 1950s was the culmination of the World War II and the commencement of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. Racial segregation was in decline but the remainders were still visible. The era was also noted for its national religious rebirths. These events in the history of the United States are also depicted in A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery OConnor. INTRODUCTION Flannery OConnor wrote A Good Man is Hard to Find in 1953 but it was published later in 1955. The period in the US was known for its political, social, and religious events. These events influenced Flannery OConnors ideals and these influences can be depicted in her short story through different elements. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Connie Ann Kirk (2008) noticed the violence in A Good Man is Hard to Find and she noted that these violence is actually a way to spring up the faith and religiosity in the story. Flannery OConnor said herself that her religion influenced her writing to a great degree (cited in Scott, 2009). Moreover, Katrina Eder (2009) affirmed that OConnors story bears evident traces of its time of composition, the 1950s. Reminders of the Southern popular culture, nostalgia and the automatic racism that pervaded the years before civil rights movement can be easily detected (p. 23). METHODOLOGY The researcher utilized a cultural study of Flannery OConnors A Good Man is Hard to Find to be able to examine the social, political, cultural, and historical influencesof the period in the short story. DISCUSSION Flannery OConnors A Good Man is Hard to Find shadowed forth the condition of the American community in the 1950s. It was during the 1950s when the culmination of the World War II and the commencement of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States took place. This condition of the American society during the time was visible in the short story. Flannery OConnor portrayed aggressive characters and intense actions in her short story so much that it was noted of its violence. According to Connie Ann Kirk (2008), the result of such violence in the characters of her short stories is their acceptance of Gods grace. The Mistif, a criminal, was actually able to mull over Gods grace during his conversations with the grandmother but was too hateful to accept it. The grandmother who was trying to be superficially upright ended up citing Jesus and His grace though she has not actually recognized Him in her life. Connie Ann Kirk (2008) confirmed that the grandmother only mouthed th e language of Christianity (p. 77). She was merely trying to appeal to the religious impulse of the Mistiff so that he would spare her life. Flannery OConnors short story is greatly influenced by his faith and religion. She was a devoted Roman Catholic, and her faith can be depicted in the inclusion of religion in her story. She said, I write the way I do because and only because I am a Catholic. If I were not a Catholic, I would have no reason to write. Being a Catholic has saved me a couple of thousand years in learning to write (cited in Scott, 2009, page xxiii). In the short story, her religious themes stand out of the violence and make it a primary justification of the existence of violence. Moreover, the era also held religious rebirths. In 1950,, The National Association of Evangelicals, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and the American Council of Christian Churches emerged. In addition to her personal faith and religious knowledge, the national religious awareness also influenced her and her writing. During the period, racial segregation was still present in the United States. It was only in 1954, when the Supreme Court began to impose a fair and equal education for all Americans regardless of their race and religion. This did not end racial discriminations yet. And it is also depicted in Connors short story. Racism is found in the way the grandmother addressed the black American child. Oh look at the cute little pickaninny! she said and pointed to a Negro child standing in the door of a shack. Wouldn't that make a picture, now? The term pickaninny which she used for the child was used to refer to slaves during the days of slavery. Slavery has not found its end in the mind of the grandmother yet as she thought of the black American girl as one according to the slaves. The grandmothers feelings toward the black American set a space between her and the American girl placing the black American girl below her. In the same way, the grandmothers feeling towards World War II is also racist. She blamed Europe of the war and thought that the Americans participation in it was avoidable. She thought the Jews were responsible for what happened and the Americans have nothing to do with it. It is evident that she sided with the Americans because she was one of them and blamed other racial groups of what was happening. Katrina Eder (2009) also commented that OConnors story bears evident traces of its time of composition, the 1950s. Reminders of the Southern popular culture, nostalgia and the automatic racism that pervaded the years before civil rights movement can be easily detected (p. 23). Elizabeth Taylor's personality Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Elizabeth Taylor's personality - Term Paper Example 10). This was her first film role, and she played the role of a young equestrian who was competing in a national championship event. This role in National Velvet landed her other subsequent, but perhaps less notable roles, until she filmed Cleopatra, which rocketed her to cult star status. According to Royster (2003), ââ¬Å"Indeed, for the rest of her life, Elizabeth Taylor tended most often to apply the excessive blue eyelid makeup designed for Cleopatraâ⬠(pp. 225). What Ms. Taylor is also known for is her elaborate relationships. According to the biographical news article ââ¬Å"Elizabeth Taylor: News Stories About Elizabeth Taylorâ⬠(2011), ââ¬Å"During her 79 years, Elizabeth Taylor appeared in more than 50 films, won two Oscars, and was married eight times to seven menâ⬠(pp. 1). Ms. Taylor also had several romances. According to the Elizabeth Taylor Biography article (2011), ââ¬Å"Elizabeth's marital affairs have been a target of many tabloidsâ⬠(pp. 1). Ms. Taylor did much charitable work. According to the article ââ¬Å"In Loving Memory of Dame Elizabeth Taylorâ⬠(2011), she worked tirelessly for raising charitable donations to AIDS victims, gaining more federal funding for AIDS research (pgh. 4). Until her death, she was always supporting her various causes. As stated in Elizabeth Taylorââ¬â¢s Charity Work, Events, and Causes (2011), Ms. Taylor also worked to ensure the ethical treatment of animals by supporting the foundation entitled Dogs Deserve Better (pgh. 1). Certainly, Ms. Taylor was a woman of remarkable talents with assets to further her causesââ¬âwhich were extensions of her graceful and compassionate heart. Hopefully others will follow her example. An Analysis of Liz Taylorââ¬â¢s Behavior, Personality Traits and Observations About Feelings, Values, and Social Relationships Ms. Taylorââ¬â¢s behavior, personality traits, and some observations about her feelings, values, and social relationships will be discussed here. Ms. Taylor was never much of a ââ¬Å"drama queenâ⬠ââ¬âexcept when it came to acting as well as personal life. She was not a standoffish person, but rather was a warm and kind individual thrust into the spotlight of fame perhaps a bit early. However, Ms. Taylor handled all of her interactions with grace and beauty. Even in her declining years, when she no longer could walk by herself, Ms. Taylor radiated a certain glow about her that was unmistakable. One of Ms. Taylorââ¬â¢s personality traits included the fact that she was a serial monogamistââ¬âat least, when she wasnââ¬â¢t having an extramarital affair. Why is it that under the long shadow cast by ââ¬Å"oldâ⬠studio Hollywood, such behavior was tolerated? Liz Taylor was indeed a beautiful woman, but what may have compelled her to get involved in such destructive relationships? Of course, no one can really entirely map out the reasons why someone would engage in romances on the side, but i t may have spoken to Ms. Taylor becauseââ¬âeven though she was very richââ¬âshe was continually dissatisfied with what she had or who she was with seemingly many times. Having been married eight times, it seems that she would have been a very fickle wife. Perhaps it could be attributed to her vanity, but perhaps there is also a deeper meaning behind those divorcesââ¬âthat she was seeking something that she could not find in one man aloneââ¬â
