The Rocking Horse Winner† by D. H. Lawrence was primarily about materialism, and illustrated how it can negatively impact more important aspects of life, such as love and family. The short story described a troubling relationship between a mother, who is incapable of love, and her son, who desired for his mother to love him. Lawrence created a perfect situation to showcase his theme, for the story is told very similar to a fairy tale. For example, â€Å"Rocking Horse Winner† begins with the omniscient narrator describing the mother,   who was beautiful, who started with all the advantages, yet she had no luck. Hester also could not love her children, for they bound her to her husband, and prevented her from achieving her ideal life style. Lawrence described Hester’s position early in the story, â€Å"She married for love, and the love turned to dust. She had bonny children, yet she felt they had been thrust upon her, and she could not love them. † Hester’s materialistic ideology was communicated throughout their home by a silent voice that whispered, â€Å"there must be more money! † The voice haunted the house, yet no one talked about it. â€Å"The whisper was everywhere, and therefore no one spoke it. Just as no one ever says: â€Å"We are breathing! †Additionally, the voice plays another essential role in the story, for every time the whisper was heard, it reminded everyone that Hester was controlled by her desire for wealth, which caused her to be unable to love them. This was particularly evident with her son Paul. One day, while talking to his mother, Paul discovered the reason why his mother did not love him. He asked her why they did not have a car of their own, Hester responded bitterly â€Å"Because we are the poor members of the family. Furthermore, she continued to explain that they were poor because they were unlucky. It was at this time Paul concluded that his parent’s bad luck was the reason his mother did not love him. He believed, in order to receive the affection from his mother that he desired, he must prove to her that he was lucky. For, if he was lucky, he could provide his mother with enough wealth that she no longer would have to stress on her social status, and would be able to love him. This marked the point where Paul began his tragic journey trying to prove to his mother that he was lucky. The narrator described Paul during the very beginning of his journey in finding luck, â€Å"He wanted luck, he wanted it, he wanted it. † Eventually, Paul became obsessed in his pursuit to find luck, which was actually an effort to become rich, which would allow his mother to love him. Lawrence describes a scene where he looks as if he were insane â€Å"He would sit on his big rocking horse, charging madly into space, with a frenzy that made the little girls peer at him uneasily. † However, Paul was far from insane, and in reality the opposite was true. When he was frantically riding his horse, he was the most focused and logical, for this was when he found luck. During his rides on his rocking horse he was engrossed in very deep and complicated thoughts. If he was successful during his ride he called it â€Å"getting there. † Later in the story, Lawrence revealed that â€Å"getting there† meant predicting the name of the horse that would win the next race. Following the win of Lively Star, Paul had accumulated immense wealth. He thought that it would be enough to silence the whisper that dominated him; however, it only made the problem worse. Later, when Paul’s uncle asked him what he was going to do with the money, Paul said, â€Å"I started it for Mother. She said she had no luck, because father is unlucky, so I thought if I was lucky, it might stop the whispering. † However, the money only fueled his mother’s materialistic nature, and the voices grew stronger, â€Å"The voices in the house suddenly went mad, like a chorus of frogs on a spring evening. † In a Newtonian Clockwork Universe, Paul’s efforts would have been enough to satisfy his mother, and ultimately win her love. Unfortunately, the story more closely relates to an Einstein’s world view, which suggests that events are not predictable. Although it becomes apparent to the reader at the end of the story that Paul cannot win his mother’s love, he does not know this, and only tries harder when he is faced with obstacles. However, the harder Paul tried to â€Å"get there† the less often he was able to, which physically and mentally wore him down. â€Å"The Grand National had gone by; he had not â€Å"known,† and had lost a hundred pounds. Summer was at hand. He was in agony for the Lincoln. The stress of several lost races, and that idea that he would not be able to earn enough money to satisfy his mother, drove Paul mad. â€Å"He became wild eyed and strange, as if something were going to explode in him. † Hester noticed how overwrought her son had become, and she was genuinely troubled by the idea of her son being ill. â€Å"His mother had sudden strange seizures of uneasiness about him. Sometimes, for half an hour, she would feel a sudden anxiety about him that was almost anguish. She wanted to rush to him at once, and know he was safe. This marked a very decisive moment in the story, for Lawrence allows the mother to feel emotions towards her family. Furthermore, while the mother is opening up to her son, the reader begins to open up to Hester. Towards the end of the story, while Paul was sick, Lawrence changed the tone of the story. It transformed from having a fairy tale like feel, to being very cutting, emotional, and real. The reader started to view Paul and his mother as real people, rather than just characters in the story that he/she was reading. This ultimately made the reader much more vulnerable to being emotionally affected by the tragic ending. Lawrence described Paul frantically riding his rocking horse to a point of complete exhaustion â€Å"Then suddenly she switched on the light, and saw her son, in his green pajamas, madly surging on the rocking horse. † During his crazed ride, Paul â€Å"got there†, and concluded that Malabar would win the next race. After his ride he fell to the ground and entered a state of unconsciousness, where he viscously tossed and turned while reciting, â€Å"Malabar! It’s Malabar! Basset, Bassett, I know! It’s Malabar! † Paul worked very hard to try to earn his mother’s love, and for a brief period of time, it appeared he was successful. For example, Lawrence describes the mother’s reaction to her son’s condition â€Å"Then he fell with a crash to the ground, and she, all her tormented motherhood flooding upon her, rushed to gather him up. † However, after a few days, it became evident that his mother was only having a moment of epiphany, and soon was back to the same cold hearted person she once was, â€Å"His mother sat, feeling her heart had gone, turned actually into a stone. † Paul, as the antagonist, takes on the role of an antihero. He strived to win his mother’s love, but he was unsuccessful. At the end of the story, when Paul realized that all of his efforts were pointless, he consequently could not handle the pain, and died. Right before Paul dies, he admits to his mother his efforts to prove to her that he was lucky â€Å"I never told you, Mother, that if I can ride my horse, and â€Å"get there,† then I’m absolutely sure-oh, absolutely! Mother did I ever tell you I was lucky! † This line reveals the importance, to Paul, of the conversation he and his mother had several years ago. During that conversation, he discovered that she was unable to love him because she did not have enough money and luck. That moment defined the rest of Paul’s life, for at that time Paul told his mother that he was lucky, and he spent the rest of his life trying to prove it to her. While on his death bed, Hester responded to Paul’s confession â€Å"No, you never did† The thought that he based his whole life off of their conversation, and she did not even remember it, is what killed Paul. Much like his rocking horse, no matter how hard Paul tried, or no matter how hard the rocking horse ran, neither Paul nor his horse gained any ground in their pursuit.

Support Worker Project Worker Social Work Essay I am a support worker/project worker in a supported housing unit in Nottingham for thirteen female young people between the ages of 16 -25 years who are usually referred from Housing Aid. The service users are homeless, some with a background of domestic breakdown and some have come out of the care system. The basic needs of the service users were addressed in an interview. After referral from Housing Aid an initial assessment of need is undertaken, which covers several needs: physical and wellbeing, such as any medication or health concerns? The young person may smoke or even have drug or alcohol issues and these will be on the referral form. The young persons mental health will then be examined and occasionally there may be additional reports from social workers or schools. High risk service users such as ex-offenders can be referred and these cases may involve probation workers. Mary is 18 years old with Portuguese parents who are separated. Marys father lives in the West Midlands and her mother lives in Nottingham. Mary lived with her mother and father for a while and then decided to live with her father. On school holidays Mary stayed with her mother. Mary was assaulted by her father at the early age of 10 years old; he hit her with a belt and with a metal bar, which resulted in Mary being placed in care after police and social services involvement. Her friend who lives in Wales is her closest contact but does not see her regularly. She does have other friends; however she avoids them because of their criminal behaviour (Appendix 1). The needs of young women arriving at the project are further assessed through another informal interview and young women are welcomed. The care package offered to young women who arrive at the hostel involves signing a tenancy agreement giving them their accommodation in the project. Each young woman has a self-contained flat within the project with a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. Most accommodation costs are met through housing benefits. If the young person is working they pay part of the service after assessment. Mary came to the UK with her family when she was young. They applied for British citizenship but did not pass it over to Mary. As she is an EU citizen, be able to be eligible for housing (Appendix1) The educational needs of the young person are examined. Basic needs in numeracy and literacy are assessed. Personal, social development and health are also taken into account and the young persons ability to budget their money. QUOTE .Without project intervention, many young people would be homeless and at great risk of exploitation and/or bad health. An important skill for this type of intervention is listening or active listening Verbal and non-verbal skills are needed in order to establish a rapport and good relationship between worker and service user. A person centred approach using listening skills and asking questions helps the service users clarify own thoughts, avoiding authoritarian language, and treating people as equal encourages them to think and act for themselves. The importance of engaging young people is to build relationships of trust and developing strategies to work towards change. It is also important to be empathic when engaging with the young person to encourage conversation. All personal feelings are left outside the workplace in order to be professional and maintain boundaries. Harrison et al (2010) states youth work is informed by a set of beliefs and helps young people to develop their own set of values. Anti-oppressive The NAOMIE framework is used to identify the needs of the young people Ingram et al, 2001). This tool is used to identify the young peoples need and works well. This has identified some of the barriers in anti -discriminatory practice on working together on issues of inequality, discrimination and oppression (Thompson, 1994). Mary attended weekly support sessions, however, at the time of the first key session, Mary had missed four appointments with Access College which raised concern about her behaviour. I learnt Mary had doubts about being able to apply herself to her educational needs, which affected her Job seekers allowance (JSA). Her service charges were paid by direct deductions from her benefits. Mary will need support in budgeting and has agreed to set up a budgeting plan with her next payment. I agreed to meet with her for a one to one session. In order to probe further into the reasons for not attending I identified motivational interviewing as the best method for Mary (Appendix 2). As a support worker I identified links within the project to refer to external agencies, such as social services and welfare agencies. I was informed from staff that her Keyworker had contact the department of working pensions (DWP) about her JSA payment s has stopped. This was due to poor attendances in college she has missed a couple of appointments. In terms of theory I used communication skills with empathy by getting to know Marys situation at using listening skills about what is say I engaged in the conversation How is your day? which I offer refreshments which is an informal way to build a rapport relationship(Egan,2002). By engaging using wider policy objectives it is a person centred base; will openly discuss within a safe environment amongst their peers and focus on building ones confidence; reassurance within a group, as well as maintaining the learners concentration. In terms of Personal: Young person 18years old was placed in care after police and social services involvement. Mary came to the UK with her family when she was young. There was no communication between her families and she has left school with low attainment s and poor attendances. In terms of Cultural: Being homeless within the community she is sharing her thoughts and feelings with different groups. Mary has friends whom she avoids now as they are getting into criminal behaviour and friends who are not into trouble. In relations of Structural: a network of divisions such as Connexions, Social Services, Health, and Local Authority. Barriers relates to ethical practice to identify form to anti-discriminatory practice to work together on issues of inequality, discrimination and oppression (Thompson, 1994). Mary is referred to floating support has continuing support from social services. Mary has a leaving care worker, called Susie who visits her from time to time (Appendix1). Excerpt from Ignor Stravinsky Essay

In this passage, Stravinsky discusses orchestra conductors, making observations and conclusions concerning their true necessity. He seemingly has carefully studied conductors’ behavior and effectively conveys his view to the reader. To present his point of view clearly, Stravinsky makes use of diction, satirical statements, and comparisons. Stravinsky manipulates his diction throughout the passage. He often uses quotations to place emphasis on certain words. His placement of quotes around the words â€Å"great† and â€Å"style† encourage the reader to look into the word for added meaning. Throughout, Stravinsky’s overall diction and statements seem rather rash and bold. He does not hesitate to present his feelings about the subject. For instance, he boldly states that â€Å"the incidence of ego disease is naturally high to begin with.† In doing so he presents the reader with the feeling of confidence. In turn, the reader doesn’t question Stravinsky’s overall knowledge of the subject matter. Also this creates a sense of informality. Throughout the passage, it seems as though Stravinsky is simply conversing with his audience. He uses parentheses and dashes within statements to create somewhat of an aside with the reader as in lines 9 and 31-34. Using this technique makes the reade r feel more comfortable and therefore better relate to the ideas being presented. Stravinsky also employs satire to attack the necessity of conductors in orchestras. Opening, Stravinsky states that conductors’ careers are not dependant on music ability, â€Å"but on the society women (including critics).† Through this statement, Stravinsky communicates that a career dependent on the ideas of women contradicts a career in music. Continuing, he speaks of ego as a natural trait in all men, and as an uncontrollable disease. In this, Stravinsky attacks how the conductors are merely concerned with their status rather than the quality of the music they render. The quotations around the words â€Å"great† and â€Å"style† also serve to create a satirical emphasis on the words’ accompanying connotations. For instance, conductors are often revered as great but for various reasons. According to Stravinsky, this status is not acquired through the creation of â€Å"great† music, but through making the former seem to be true. Also the conductor’s â€Å"style,†Ã‚  according to Stravinsky, is not a genuine technique in conducting, but merely a series of fabricated gestures that make them unique from other conductors. Several comparisons to conducting also serve to express Stravinsky’s overall point of view and desired message. First, he relates conducting directly to politics. He regards conducting as â€Å"more for the making of careers and exploiting personalities.† Conductors must manipulate people just as politicians do; they must be a â€Å"complete angler.† Through the manifestation of the relationship between politics and conducting, Stravinsky depicts conducting as a dishonest and manipulative affair. Stravinsky then speaks of conductors’ ego and relates it to a disease, a â€Å"disease that grows like a tropical weed under the sun of a pandering public.† This comparison demonstrates how conductors’ egos control their actions and provide the social faà §ade of â€Å"greatness.† Stravinsky relates conductors to actors as well. He mentions that conductors must play a role to appear great. Also expressed in the passage is that most audiences know very little about the music being performed, therefore allowing the conductor to merely show the audience how to feel and react. In conclusion, Stravinsky attacks the actual necessity and overall role of orchestra conductors. Throughout he effectively uses distinct rhetorical devices and language and, in turn, successfully conveys his inclusive perception of them.

Mans Search for Meaning in Samuel Becketts Waiting for...

Waiting for Godot, by Samuel Beckett; a tragic comedy in which Estragon and Vladimir wait for a person named Godot, who never shows up. This existentialist play, which takes place in a single setting, and time, follows the actions and the traditional rules of human existence, and doing nothing in their lives except waiting. Beckett has written a play in which nothing happens, and one minute is no different than the next. The play ends exactly the way it begins, with two men waiting impatiently for Godot and try to exist in the hostile and uncaring world by their human condition, e.g. they keep repeating themselves, talking nonsense, forgetting and trying to find the answer the question: Who and where is Godot? In this way repetition dictates the structure of the play. No climax occurs in the play because the only thing the plot builds to is the coming of Godot. However, by the end of the first act the audience has begun that Godot will never show up. Not very long into the second act before the audience realizes that all Vladimir and Estragon are really doing is wasting time, â€Å"Waiting for...waiting.† (50) This tells us that do something than waiting around, because Estragon and Vladimir do nothing than wait, and they should stop waiting or either find Godot or leave because Godot might not come forever. Beckett has written an existentialism play showing that an individual must take action instead of just sitting around and waiting. In the entire play Estragon and Vladimir never refer to each other as Estragon and Vladimir, but rather Gogo and Didi their nicknames. Despite Vladimir and Estragon being two distinct characters on the stage, they constantly finish off each other’s sentences. The question of whether poverty is a human rights issue is a controversial one. On the one hand, in development economics theory, poverty is defined as deprivation or a lack of income and has to be solved through economic growth. On the other hand, from the perspective of international human rights laws, poverty is first and foremost as a denial of fundamental rights and as such it’s a human rights crisis. However, in the final analysis and based on both my experience as a citizen of one the poorest countries in the world (the DR Congo) and development economics background, I believe that poverty is first a human rights phenomenon, not an economic one. As such, human rights give some kind of special entitlement to rights’ holders which, in return, give rise to claims if they cannot be enjoyed or they happen to be denied. The abuse of political power is generally committed by States who are both duty bearers and services providers and must be held accountable when they fail to fulfill their duties of respecting, protecting and promoting human rights. Non-state actors as well can fail to respect, protect and promote human rights under the territory they control and must be held to account. Based on this conceptual background, and in accordance with Irene Khan’s analysis on poverty and human rights , poverty is characterized by four main features, notably: deprivation, insecurity, voiceless and powerlessness. Based on these features and as Irene Khan argues, â€Å"poverty is not primarily about economics and income levels. It is about the powerlessness experienced in so many ways by those living in poverty.
